The National Shrine of Saint Jude, based on Tanners Street in Faversham will be celebrating our special Feast Day on 28 and 29 October 2017.

Saint Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles appointed by Jesus to lead his Church. He is sometimes identified with Jude, referred to in the Bible as "brother" or "kinsman" of Jesus (Luke 6:16; Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55-57).

The National Shrine of Saint Jude is based in Faversham, and is an annex to the parish church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The development of the parish into a centre of devotion to Saint Jude arose out of the work of the Carmelite Press. The Press printed a newsletter, Carmelite News, which kept supporters of the friars in touch with their developments at Faversham and across the country. Carmelite News became an important communication link between the Order and its supporters. This was run by Fr. Elias Lynch, O.Carm – a Carmelite Friar.

In the early 1950s Fr. Elias received an increasing number of requests from readers of Carmelite News for prayer cards of St. Jude. Having distributed such a card, donations to "The Shrine of St. Jude" and requests for prayers started flooding in. Such a shrine did not exist, but perceiving the need Fr. Elias quickly developed a place of prayer and devotion to the Apostle Jude alongside the parish church in Faversham.

The National Shrine of Saint Jude continues to distribute this newsletter three or four times a year to friends of the Carmelite Family in Britain and abroad. If anyone would like to receive a copy of the newsletter, please let us know via shrineoffice@stjudeshrine.org.uk.
